The Loom and the Mountain

There is no shortcut in the Sierra Nevada. Cotton is planted in small plots between the coffee and the cloud forest, harvested by hand, and spun on a drop spindle that has not changed in shape for centuries.

The weaver sits with the frame against her body. Tension is judged by feel, not measurement — which is why two hammocks from the same loom will never hang identically.

What you buy, in the end, is time. One hundred and sixty hours of it, given by one person, in one place, to one object.
