Colour From the Earth

Every colour in a Wiwa hammock was growing somewhere within a day's walk of the loom. Achiote seed gives rose and ochre; river clay gives the softer greys; indigo arrives from the lowlands.

Recipes are not written. They are held by families and adjusted every year according to rainfall, which is why a hammock woven in a dry season is measurably warmer in tone.

The result is a palette that cannot be reproduced industrially — and does not fade so much as settle.
